What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing redness, flushing, and sometimes small red bumps or pimples. The exact cause of rosacea is not known, but it is believed to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Rosacea tends to affect fair-skinned individuals and is more common in women than in men. While rosacea can occur at any age, it typically begins after the age of 30 and becomes more common as people age. There is no cure for rosacea, but it can be effectively managed with appropriate treatment and lifestyle modifications. Around 1 in 10 people in the UK are thought to develop rosacea.

Tips on how to manage Rosacea:

  1. Try to identify and avoid triggers that can exacerbate your rosacea. It may be helpful to keep a diary of your symptoms and note any triggers that seem to make them worse. Avoiding these triggers can help you manage your symptoms more effectively.

  1. Always protect your skin from the sun. Cosmedica Clinics recommend wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, incorporating it as part of your daily skin care regime and avoid prolonged sun exposure. In clinic, we have a several SPFs that are suitable for sensitive skin that is prone to redness.

  1. Use gentle skincare products that will not irritate your skin. Choose mild, fragrance-free products that are formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid harsh scrubs or exfoliants that can irritate your skin. Cosmedica Clinics have medical grade skincare products and gentle facials that are evidence based and designed to calm and soothe your skin to help reduce the redness.

  1. If you have bumps or pimples, after a consultation and discussion with Dr Cooney or Nurse Vicky, you may have the option to be prescribed a short course of topical or oral medication to help treat them.

  1. Consider light therapy: This treatment can help reduce redness and improve the overall appearance of your skin. Cosmedica Clinics recommends Dermalux® Tri-Wave MD LED light therapy. The Near Infrared is able to target deeper cells to calm redness and irritation in the skin.

All Comedica Clinics treatment plans are personalised to meet the specific needs and requirements of each client. Clinic treatments are devised and work in combination with a home care regime to maximise results. With appropriate care and management, most people with rosacea can control their symptoms reducing skin redness and irritation.
