Vitamins and Health
Vitamins and minerals are small chemical nutrients that we all needed for our body to stay healthy. Some vitamins are manufactured by our body when we are healthy (but some only obtained through our diet (known as essential vitamins). We all need to ensure a varied diet to take into account vitamin intake.
Many vitamins, such as vitamin C for the immune system and vitamin D for our bones, are well known for their specific health-giving properties and there are sometimes, but not always, good sources in the diet. There are twenty vitamins so I won’t detail all of them but needless to say we can become deficient in vitamins if our diet is poor, if we are malnourished, or if our general health is poor.
Vitamin A (cheese eggs, milk, oily fish) is vital to maintain the body’s natural defence against illness and infection the immune system), as well as helping vision in dim light and healthy skin.
Vitamin C (Citrus fruits strawberries, broccoli, sprouts and potatoes) is well known to play a role in maintaining our immune systems to help protect against infections and improve wound healing. Severe deficiency of Vitamin C still occurs in the third world countries resulting in scurvy!
Vitamin D (obtained predominately from exposure to sunlight and some foods such as red meat and oily fish) In the UK with short winter days and limited exposure to sun and especially over the past year with lockdown, there has been increasing concern that the UK population may already be generally vitamin D deficient. The government has indeed recommended all adults in the UK to consider oral vitamin D supplement (400 units or 10 micrograms per day), to maintain bone health. All elderly people living in nursing care homes in the UK are being offered daily vitamin D supplements to reduce the risk of osteoporosis (weak bones) and fractures.
